Interview with MC Bonde Radio personality, Tv host, MC and Actor I had the privilege of spending time on a Zoom interview with a talented personality. For someone working in entertainment and broadcasting, there are no 8 to 5 timetables. Radio shows are twenty-four hours long and work-related functions are scheduled all through the night. Mc Bonde has worked on the radio for over five years and has had the privilege of starring in a Netflix Movie titled Clash. He is also a well-seasoned Master of ceremonies and has been the voice of the Afrimma Music Awards held in Dallas Texas. On weekends he is booked as an MC for weddings and hosts concerts and other corporate events.

M. What do you like about working in radio and entertainment?

I love music and content creation. I get to share the latest music with the world and in the process, I also get to meet some of my idols through interviews we do at the station. I also loved researching what’s happening around the world and sharing it on the radio.

M. What were your challenges with having a radio show? I don’t feel you face challenges when you are doing something you love, for me it was more of how to balance my time. As I mentioned, I also do MC work, so travelling around the country and making time to do a live or pre-recorded show takes dedication and discipline.

M. What do you think you need to do to stand out in the creative field of media?

All you need is to be original. Always remember there can only be one you and that’s what will make you stand out from the rest. A lot of students assume copying other famous personalities' styles will get them the same results they receive; they can only be one Kevin Heart and Joe Rogan. It will take time to perfect your craft, enjoy the process.

M. Did you curate your music or did the station put it together?

I did both, for the African show I was hosting and producing the show, so I had to put my music together. For primetime shows, Monday to Friday, the music is preloaded by the music department staying in compliance with CRTC regulations where we must balance Canadian content and international music.

M. What advice would you give someone getting into radio?

Brace yourself! Long nights and always being prepared. I used to be in the studio three to four hours before my show. Make sure you take down notes of what you are planning to do on the show. Don’t forget to have fun with it, remember radio, your audience knows when you are prepared or when you are happy to be there with them.

My interview with MC Bonde gave me a different perspective as a student in radio and broadcasting. There are no shortcuts to being on the radio. The bulk of the work is done before the actual show. It's very important to do your due diligence. Everyday practice and keep up to date with the latest trends and news to have content for your show.
